Trauma patients commonly have weak or absent peripheral pulses in presence of any major injury or bleeding. Peripheral pulses are nearly undetectable once the systolic blood pressure drops below 80mmHg. This is why EMTs and paramedics check the radial AND carotid pulses.
For further fun, any kind of vascular/coronary compromise can affect peripheral pulses. Bottom line: always check the neck.
